Global Titanium Dioxide Pigment Consumption

The global titanium dioxide pigment market rose to $21.4B in 2020, surging by 2% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, indirect taxes and distributors’ margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2010 to 2020.

In value terms, the largest titanium dioxide pigments markets worldwide were China ($4B), the U.S. ($2.9B) and Japan ($1.3B), together accounting for 38% of the global market. These countries were followed by Mexico, Germany, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada and Spain, which together accounted for a further 32%.

Global Titanium Dioxide Pigment Imports

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of titanium dioxide pigments and colouring preparations increased by 7.8% to 4M tonnes in 2020. In value terms, supplies amounted to $10.3B ( IndexBox estimates).

The countries with the highest levels of titanium dioxide pigments imports in 2020 were Belgium (347K tonnes), Germany (291K tonnes), India (263K tonnes), the U.S. (240K tonnes), China (187K tonnes), Turkey (157K tonnes), Italy (152K tonnes), France (151K tonnes), South Korea (145K tonnes), Brazil (136K tonnes), Mexico (114K tonnes) and Canada (100K tonnes), together accounting for 57% of total import. Spain (100K tonnes) held a minor share of total imports.

In value terms, Germany ($783M), Belgium ($729M) and India ($644M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2020, with a combined 21% share of global imports.

In 2020, the average titanium dioxide pigments import price amounted to $2,588 per tonne, which is down by -6.6% against the previous year. Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2020, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in China ($3,109 per tonne) and Italy ($2,793 per tonne), while Belgium ($2,099 per tonne) and Brazil ($2,382 per tonne) were amongst the lowest. From 2010 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
